IRA Funds for Green Energy Projects

IRA Funds for Individual & Church Green Energy Projects

Ronald Newman, Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Treasury for Inflation Reduction Act Implementation, has spent the past several months engaging faith-based organizations and intermediaries such as Interfaith Power & Light regarding the Inflation Reduction Act framework, explaining concepts ranging from Direct Pay to the Investment Tax Credit. I have taken steps to better ensure that faith-based organizations can access the support they need with project planning, project management, financial analysis, financing, tax preparation and filing, and more.  Mr. Newman will explain how Presbyterians can lead within the faith-based community in the clean energy transition. Join us to learn more about how congregations can access this critical funding to make the installation of green energy projects possible. (For corresponding information about green energy projects in the graphic, please see Environmental Defense Fund web page HERE.)

Topics covered in the presentation will include:

  • Direct Pay, as a tool for nonprofits: Publication 5817-D (Rev. 4-2024) (irs.gov)
  • the tax credits accessible by nonprofits: Publication 5817-G (6-2023) (irs.gov)
  • the tax credits accessible by individuals/families (recognizing that churches lead communities of individuals): Publication 5886-A (Rev. 1-2024) (irs.gov)

Webinar Date: Tuesday, July 23, 2024

Presenter: Ronald Newman, U.S. Dept. of Treasury
Ronald Newman (“Ronnie”) serves as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Treasury for Inflation Reduction Act Implementation. In addition to contributing to efforts to issue key tax-related guidance and working with the IRS to put in place user-friendly processes and resources for tax credit claimants, he engages in wide-ranging stakeholder engagement and outreach to inform Treasury’s approach and educate the public about key IRA benefits. Current priorities include working to ensure that key tax credits are well-understood and well-utilized by important beneficiary groups, including consumers/households and non-profits.

Ronald graduated from Morehouse College and holds a J.D. from Yale Law School. Prior to law school, he spent periods of his career living and working in China, studying issues related to trade and development. Ronald also spent a period of his early career in the investment banking sector at Goldman Sachs and Co. He is based in Washington, D.C.

Host: Bruce Gillette, PEC Moderator, will host the webinar.  He had solar panels installed on his home in 2017 and helped coordinate the installation of 180 solar panels at the Limestone Presbyterian Church where he and his wife Carolyn Winfrey Gillette were serving as pastors.  In July 2024 they became the new owners of an electric vehicle and received $7500 from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

This webinar is graciously co-sponsored by the PC(USA) Office of Public Witness, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and the PCUSA Investment & Loan Program.
